A Tree Fell on My House in Honolulu โ€” What Do I Do?

If a tree has just fallen on your house, you're likely scared, stressed, and looking for answers fast. Here's exactly what to do โ€” in order โ€” to protect your family, your home, and your insurance claim.

1. Get Everyone to Safety

If the tree has compromised your roof or walls, evacuate immediately. Don't assume the structure is stable โ€” the weight of the tree may be supported by elements that could fail. Get everyone out, including pets. Move to a neighbor's home or your car if necessary.

2. Call 911 if Anyone Is Injured or Trapped

If anyone is hurt or trapped by the tree, call 911 first. Emergency medical services should respond before tree removal begins.

3. Check for Power Lines

Look (don't touch) for any power lines that may have come down with the tree. If you see downed wires, stay at least 30 feet away and call HECO at (808) 548-7311. Do not approach the tree if wires are involved.

4. Call Oahu Tree Rescue

Call (808) 376-2857 for emergency tree removal. We respond 24/7 and prioritize trees on structures. Tell us: Is anyone injured? Are power lines involved? What part of the house is affected? Our crew will be dispatched immediately.

5. Document Everything Before Removal

This step is critical for your insurance claim. Before anyone starts cutting, take extensive photos and video from every accessible angle. Document: the tree and where it landed, the damage to the roof/walls/structure, the root ball (this helps show why the tree fell), and any damaged personal property. Wide shots and close-ups. Date-stamped if possible.

6. Call Your Insurance Company

File a claim as soon as possible. Key things to know about Hawaii homeowner's insurance and trees:

  • Covered: Tree removal is typically covered when a tree falls on a covered structure (home, garage, fence)
  • Typically NOT covered: A tree that falls in your yard without hitting a structure
  • Deductible applies: Your policy deductible will apply to the total claim
  • Neighbor's tree? If your neighbor's tree fell onto your property and damaged your home, your insurance typically handles it (not theirs)

7. Temporary Weatherproofing

In Honolulu, rain can follow a storm quickly. Once the tree is removed from your roof, temporary tarping or boarding is essential to prevent water damage โ€” which can rapidly escalate repair costs. Your tree service or a general contractor can assist with temporary protection. Keep receipts โ€” these costs are typically covered under your insurance claim.

8. Get Structural Assessment

After emergency tree removal, have a contractor or structural engineer assess the damage. What looks like surface damage may have affected load-bearing elements. Don't assume the house is safe just because the tree has been removed.

9. Have Your Other Trees Assessed

If one tree on your property failed, others may have been weakened by the same storm. A professional assessment of your remaining trees can identify secondary risks before they become the next emergency.

If a tree is on your house right now, call (808) 376-2857 immediately. We respond 24/7.
